Benefits to the Environment
Shopping through a co-op reduces your impact on
the environment in at least three ways:
| |
1.
Trips to the supermarket are greatly decreased,
thus saving fuel and also the food miles that
supermarkets clock up through importation and
distribution.
2. By buying in bulk the amount of packaging used
is reduced leading to less waste.
3. A majority of the goods are organic, thus
supporting sustainable and harmonious farming.
|
Supporting local co-ops like Essential Trading puts money back into your community. As
they stock fairly-traded products where possible,
sustainable practices are being supported with farmers
abroad.
How it works
A food co-operative is simply a group of people
who get together to buy in bulk at a discounted rate.
Members place an order every few weeks, (four to
six depending on demand).
Place and pay for your order one week before
delivery
Collect your order two to three days after
delivery

What is available
Virtually anything that is sold in a wholefood
shop is available, most of which is organic and fair
trade.
Things you use a lot of; staples like, baked
beans, soya milk, breakfast cereals, flour (if you make
your own bread), rice, tea, coffee, Yannoh, etc.
Some cleaning materials, toiletries, tissues and
toilet paper etc.
Many supplements and items like hemp seed oil are
available singly, still at wholesale prices.
Organic wines, spirits and soft drinks.
Others members may be willing to split cases with
you.
Membership
Food co-ops are run by volunteers so, all members have to
pay a small joining fee of £1 pound for lifetime
membership. Members must continue to make at least one
order on an annual basis. Membership is deemed to have
lapse if no order is made for a year and membership they
must renewed to enable further orders to be made.
A 3% charge is added to the wholesale prices to cover
administration cost.
We use the Co-operative Bank for Keynsham Food Co-ops
banking in support of their ethical Investments.
